The health issue that concerns me the most is child obesity. Child obesity is becoming more a problem now. Children are spending too much time in front of the t.v, playing video games or sleeping and not enough time engaging in physical activities. Children that are obese are at greater risks for diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. I feel that parents play an important part in their children lives. They are role models. They must set good examples for their children . I feel that families need to educate themselves on the importance of healthy eating habits so that they can better help their children fight this disease. I look forward to becoming a health educator so that I can focus on this health issue and help families who are facing this devastating disease.
I interviewed a 42 year old white female. She expressed to me her biggest health issue was lack of insurance available to low income families. She states that Medicaid only covers people who are really poor and that it is not fair that there is not any help for the people that are just above that. Her concern is that lack of insurance means lack of health care for individuals which leads to illness and hospitalization.
I interviewed a 26 year old black female. Her major health concern is diabetes. She worries about this health issue because both her parents have diabetes and have had many health problems due to this. She is afraid she will get it. She is attending college now and wants to become a nurse so that she can educate herself and others on Diabetes.
Even though we all have different health concerns, I think our goal is to educate ourselves and others. Education is the key.

hello Melissa.
ReplyDeletei agree with you 100 percent. Children are suffering from being over weight and the really sad part about it is the children have no control over it. They cannot help that their parents get take out 3 times a week or that their mom never cooks meals like she should.
I agree with you Melissa about childhood obesity because it is becoming a serious issue. There are so many video games and T.V. shows that are hindering children from engaging in physical activity. I do like the Wii game console because it has combined something that children like to do with physical activity so they can enjoy it and benefit from it.
ReplyDeleteHi Melissa,
ReplyDeleteI do agree with you Melissa that child obesity is a big concern. It saddens me to see over weight children and how it not only damges their phyisical abilities, but their self-esteem as well. It really starts at home with the parents as their parents are the prime example to teach their children how to eat healthy and how exercise makes you feel better inside and out.
I agree with you that child obesity is a concern. Where I worked before I saw alot of overweight children. I was on a commitee on what we should do to help promote healthy eating. When giving ideas of how we could help in school, my ideas were shot down. One of my ideas was to remove the soda machines and candy machines from the school. I was told no that would not help. If we can't even get the schools on board with trying new things, how can we ask parents to do the same?
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that kids are spending too much time sitting around and not participating in any after school programs that encourage physical activity. Parents should definately enforce more physical activities in the home and outside as well. Their are many activities that allow parents to participate with their kids. The media should also encourage physical activities and healthy eating. The negative choices we make are risk factors that leads to diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and other illnessess.
ReplyDeleteI think that child obesity is one of those things that is passed from generation to generation. The parents don't know about proper nutrition and exercise, so how can they teach it to their children. So many mother's are just trying to get through each day with way too many responsibilities, that they don't have time or energy to study and learn how to plan and cook nutritional meals. I am 52 and just now trying to learn to cook, not to mention cook healthy meals. Don't get me wrong, I can make high fat casseroles and comfort food, because that is what I grew up on, however my mother didn't offer fruits and vegetables in our home much, so it has taken me a long time to not only develop my taste for them, but to not see them as a punishment. Exercise is the same. In my family it was imporoper to get dirty (sweat). It meant something bad. We have to change people's mindset, but it needs to start with parents, and we need to be empathetic and kind as we share our knowledge.
